The SysBioLab was established at the University of Algarve in 2008 under the Ciência 2007 initiative by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Starting with just Matthias Futschik as PI, we grew a lot over the years and worked on a wide range of topics in biology and medicine. Our common focus have been molecular networks in various organisms, their structure and their functioning with the goal to interpret molecular events within their network context and connect them to observable phenotypes. To this end, we have been exploiting the wealth of available biological data and information, the power of computers and - last but not least - the ingenuity of our brain to come up with novel and innovative approaches that can cope with the complexity of the molecular world. We have been associated with the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and the Center for Biomedical Research (CBMR).
