The SysBioLab was established in 2008 under the Ciência 2007 initiative by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Starting with just Matthias Futschik as PI at the University of Algarve, we grew a lot over the years and worked on a wide range of topics in biology and medicine. Our common focus have been molecular networks in various organisms, their structure and their functioning with the goal to interpret molecular events within their network context and connect them to observable phenotypes. To achieve this, we leveraged vast amounts of biological data, computational power, and creative thinking to develop innovative approaches that address the complexity of the molecular world.

Over the years, we were associated with the Center for Biomedical Research (CBMR) and Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of the Univeristy of Algarve. Following an extended period in the UK, where Matthias served as a full professor of bioinformatics at the University of Plymouth and held positions at Imperial College, MRC Institute of Medical Science, and the UK Health Security Agency, he has returned to Portugal to take up an PI position and the position as Head of the Bioinformatics and Data Analytics Unit at the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CiBB) at the University of Coimbra - and of course to restart the SysBioLab there (and if he finds finally time to overhaul the webdesign of this page ;-)

Stay tuned for exciting developments!
